In following this trend, the Eatontown Board of Education has formed an ad hoc committee to explore ways the district can use alternative energy resources.
Board of Education President Mark Kramer explained that thus far, the board has carried out a full energy audit of district facilities and has begun discussions with solar contractors to determine costs to the district.
From the beginning, Kramer said, the board expressed significant interest in a Solar energy program.
“We knew that we wanted to explore some sort of renewable energy-type thing, possibly solar … and we thought it was worth pursuing for two reasons, both the educational advantages of having solar on the buildings because … it teaches renewable energy to the students, and at the same time ifwe could actually save some money thatwould be a bonus,” he said.
After the idea of a solar initiative was raised, the board decided to perform the energy audit to gauge the district’s energy use, Kramer explained.
