“In response to URI’s environmentally-conscious students,” reads URI’s Tuesday press release, “Hillside Hall will have up to 30 percent of its domestic hot water needs supplied by rooftop Solar collectors… Many of the building materials will have recycled content, and the building will also feature naturally ventilated spaces, a vegetated roof, heat-recovery equipment, indoor bicycle storage, and building energy monitors in the main lobby.” The rooftop solar equipment was funded entirely by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant.
Hillside hall is the next step in the University’s transformational goals, according to Dooley.
Several speakers emphasized that enrollment at URI is growing at record rates, and construction of Hillside Hall will help the University keep up with the demand in a cost-effective, environmentally sound manner.
“It is a much needed boost in quality of life at URI,” said the University’s Student Senate President David Coates.
