Jennifer Chirico, the new director of SLIM, brought Duda and almost 60 other Solar collectors industry experts and interested parties together to participate in the first event of the Sustainable Business Program: Technology Training in Business for Sustainability.
According to Duda, who is also a principal in the solar company RevoluSun, the year 2011 brings together the reduction of system costs, great tax incentives and increasing energy prices to inspire many more people to invest into a solar energy system.
New companies are also entering the field, such as Eurosol Hawai‘i, the subsidiary of a large German solar company.
Solar energy usage consists of the solar hot water sector and photovoltaic (PV) sector—the production of energy through the use of special panels. Duda said that Solar water heater installations exceed Hawai‘i’s in only Israel and Malta.
PV was the focus of the SLIM event.
In Hawai‘i, the PV sector was established, for the most part, in the last three years. Most PV panels have been installed under the net metering program, in which the electric meter runs backwards if the solar energy system creates more energy than the building uses. Only a few systems actually produce extra electricity, which is sold to the electric company.
