Shumlin, state leaders watch Solar energy in the making.

Some of the state’s top officials watched Wednesday as an iPhone turned the state’s largest solar farm toward the sun.

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, Lt. Governor Phil Scott and Speaker of the House Shap Smith were in South Burlington to watch the last of 382 solar trackers move in a position perpendicular with the sun.

It’s the largest solar installation in Vermont, according to Andrew Savage, director of communications and public affairs for All Earth Renewables, the company that made the solar panels.

The pole-mounted trackers used innovative GPS and wireless technology to actively follow the sun throughout the day, producing more than 40 percent more energy than fixed solar, according to Savage.

The panels produce 2.2 megawatts of electricity, about enough to light roughly 450 Vermont homes, according to related news reports.

David Blittersdorf, CEO and founder of AllEarth Renewables, said the project can power homes and also provide clean energy jobs. Part of the state’s Standard Offer program, the farm will sell an estimated 2.91 million annual kilowatt of power generated by the installation to Vermont’s Sustainably Priced Energy Development (SPEED) Program, according to Savage.

Shumlin and his administration are pushing Vermont to become a national pioneer in renewable energy, considering the state’s fight against its largest energy producer - the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.
