NMMC plans an energy park

"We are looking forward to developing permanent demo units in the city to spread awareness about using natural resources like solar and bio-energy amongst residents. Our purpose is to educate and enlighten residents about non-conventional ways," a senior civic official, who did not wish to be named, said. He hoped that the Rs2.69-crore project will help reduce the gap between energy requirements and availability of the same.

The corporation is currently thinking of developing the project on one of the two identified lands, measuring three acres apiece - in Kopari and Nerul. The park will comprise 2D and 3D video theaters with capacity of 20 seats; digital library information kiosks and laboratories demonstrating solar, wind and water energy generation. "Our experts will show people how to make the best use of equipments such as solar water heater, air-conditioner, cooker, refrigerator and system generator for daily purposes. The same we are planning to use for social purposes like street lights, etc," he added.

The civic body will get Rs1 crore assistance to develop the project. The rest of the money will come from the civic coffers. The corporation is also thinking of charging residents for the same. "Residents will have to pay for visiting the units. However, the prices will be nominal," the official said.

City residents too have welcomed the proposal, saying it was good for them to cling to non-conventional energy rather than wait for the state government to clear the power deficit. "Politicos have been flooding us with assurances for the past decade or so. But nothing has happened towards generating more power. People are not much aware about using non-conventional resources. Hence, NMMC units will be useful then. In addition to letting us know how to use the resources, the corporation can also see to it that people actually use equipments such as solar cooker," Vashi resident Ajit Kakde said.
