A plan to install solar panels on the roof of Elk River City Hall has been shelved.
“Really the payback wasn’t there to justify it at this time,” Elk River Finance Director Tim Simon told the city council at the March 7 meeting.
The system would not meet the city’s expectations for payback due to the current heating system and the number of solar collectors that could be put on the roof.
The city had received a $49,558 grant to install 16 solar collectors on the roof to offset natural gas consumption. Elk River’s match on the project would have been $50,000.
The city received two bids but after reviewing the matter the council decided to reject the bids and cancel the project.
